A busy schedule of activities for 40th World Congress of ‘Penyes’

NEWS 29 Jul 2019 - Supporters' Clubs World Confederation

The entity is organising the traditional 7-a-side football, videogame and card tournament, and for the first time will host the Masters Final of the Penyes Padel Tour

The FC Barcelona Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation has two reasons to celebrate. Last Wednesday 24 July, the movement commemorated its 100th anniversary, an especially exciting occasion coming just days before the 40th World Congress of Supporters’ Clubs from August 2 to 4. The annual event brings together thousands of fans at the Camp Nou and Palau de Congressos to share concerns and look forward to new challenges for the century-old institution. Guests will also be able to enjoy all the now-traditional activities, such as the 7-a-side football, eSports and card competition, plus the first final of the Penyes Padel Tour, and a host of other fun attractions to create a veritable blaugrana festival.

Sporting side of the ‘Penyes’

Sport plays a central role in almost everything the ‘Penyes’ do, and naturally does so at the Congress too. The clubs’ youth teams will be at the Annexes Miniestadi to play in the 14th edition of 7-a-side football tournament, being held on August 2 and 3 and fostering sport among young fans while also encouraging fair play, as recognised by the Josep Mª Profitós award. Thirty U10 and U12 teams will be representing different official FC Barcelona supporters’ clubs.

The tournament surpassed all expectations last year with 250 children taking part in a competition that will once again be run by former Barça first team star Paco Clos. The trophies will again be presented at the Annexes Miniestadi, at a ceremony attended by FC Barcelona and Confederation directors.

A new feature for this summer is the Masters Finals of the Penyes Padel Tour, a new competition that culminates on Saturday 3 August at 9.30 am at Club Esportiu Laietà, to be contested by the winning pairs from tournaments held in recent months in Andalusia and Catalonia. There are men’s and women’s tournaments being organised on a knockout basis.

Traditions at the Congress

The Auditori 1899 will be hosting the eighth edition of our card competition, playing the traditional Catalan game of ‘Botifarra’. The date is Saturday 3 August, the time is 4.00 pm, and as usual, a huge turnout is expected.

That same night, the Camp Nou forecourt will be the venue for the much-anticipated open-air dinner, which will be attended by members of the FC Barcelona board, plus leading figures from the Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation. This is always a wonderful chance for supporters from all over the world to gather and share thoughts, while also enjoying live music and other surprises in what is always a terrific party atmosphere.

As a special privilege this year, the official FC Barcelona store will be staying open and offering discounts of between 20 and 30% for all ‘penyistes’, who will also receive a free gift.

eSports and exclusive premiere

There will be room for eSports at the Congress with a Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 (PES 2019) competition. Following different qualifying matches, the Penyes Futbol Games tournament on August 4 brings together the finalists from each Federation, playing in teams of four to combine the singles and doubles formats. It’s taking place in the Auditori 1899 from 10.00 am and involves twenty boys and girls.

As a final attraction, everyone will also be able to enjoy an exclusive screening of the documentary Wonder about Lionel Messi. This will be the premiere showing of a film forming part of the This is Football series about the global passion for the game. Journalist and co-author John Carlin will be in the Auditorium at the Palau de Congressos to introduce the film on Sunday 4 August at 5.00 pm, after the Gala Dinner.

This will be closing event of an extraordinary institutional day for the Congress, bringing together more than 700 supporters’ clubs and representatives of the 30 Federations of FC Barcelona ‘Penyes’ from all around the world.
