NEWS 13 Jan 2021 - Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation
Event to be broadcast at 10 am (CET) on BarçaTV, BarçaTV+ and the Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation website and to include a debate between the FC Barcelona presidential candidates
The Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation has announced that the 41st World Congress of Supporters’ Clubs will be held next Sunday 17 January in a remote format. The event is normally held on the same dates as the Joan Gamper Trophy and brings together supporters clubs and their members from all around the world, but has had to be adapted this year to the current situation. In order to maintain contact between penyes around the world, and despite the current restrictions on mobility and social gatherings, it shall go ahead in a manner that will fully respect the strict requirements of the health authorities and will safeguard the health of all participants.
The 41st World Congress of Supporters’ Clubs will be making use of the latest technologies that have been specially designed for such remote viewing. Starting at 10 am (CET), it will be broadcast in full on BarçaTV (on DTT in Catalonia and in the basic packages of Movistar+, Vodafone, Orange and Euskaltel elsewhere in Spain), as well as on BarçaTV+ and via streaming on the Confederation website and its Facebook account.
“The challenge is to connect the penya movement in such difficult times and to contribute to an election that is so important for the club, which is why the Penyes Council has opted for this method. We won’t let the virus stop us”, said Antoni Guil, president of the Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation.
Recognition for work against Covid-19
Apart from presenting issues regarding the Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation in 2019/20, the 41st World Congress of Supporters’ Clubs will also be recognising the work done by the penya movement to combat the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ever since the state of alarm was announced, its members have been making donations to the Food Bank and the Blood and Tissue Bank, and have made financial and material contributions to hospitals, charities and homes.
The event will also review the movement’s different activities in recent months, most of which have been readapted to the new circumstances. It will also present future projects that will be guiding the ongoing work to make the supporters movement more modern and sustainable in future years.
Debate among FC Barcelona presidential candidates
The 41st World Congress of Supporters’ Clubs comes at the height of the FC Barcelona presidential elections, just one week before voting takes place. Therefore the Supporters’ Clubs World Confederation in association with Seguiment FCB, will be including a debate between all candidates who have made the cut and will be officially standing for election. The idea is for most of the content to be related to issues of concern to the Social Area.
“We want to offer the candidates the chance to speak directly to penyes and supporters watching the Congress from their homes and to explain the parts of their manifestos that most affect them”, says Antoni Guil. “The Confederation is fully implicated in the election process, first by holding meetings with all pre-candidates to pool future projects, and then by offering our over 190 club houses for collection of support slips.”
